Because Queen Scarlette Is Cool....And I Should Be Sleeping Right Now....

Been meaning to do this for WEEKS. So....here goes....

What is your husband’s name?
J
How long did you date? 5 months dating plus 3 month engagement Honestly, it seemed like forever since we both "knew" during the first month.
How old is he? 30
Who eats sweets? I have a major sweet tooth, but my husband is the chocoholic.
Who said I love you first? Verbally? Him. I think.
Who is taller? J
Who can sing better? We try and sing together in order to cancel each other out.
Who is smarter? Depends.
Who does the laundry? Depends on how big a load or how bad the weather is. J will do a Saturday morning date at the laundry mat with our oldest if we have a bunch of laundry or it's raining (so I don't have to schlep it back and forth in the rain.) So in the winter, mostly him. in the dry months, me. Hooray for a husband that knows how to work a washer and dryer! :)
Who pays the bills? Me
Who sleeps on the right side of the bed? Me
Who mows the lawn? hmmmm.. How 'bout taking out the trash? That's usually me. Because he ALWAYS forgets and I can't stand the smell. ;)
Who cooks dinner? Mostly me. But he is an excellent cook. Much more creative in the kitchen than I.
Who drives? When we're in the car together he drives. Except when I drop him off or pick him up from work. (Because I hate getting in and out for such a short trip... and besides, I don't want to have to interact with anyone in the morning!!)
Who is the first to admit they are wrong? Me. But only when I'm ACTUALLY wrong. Which is never. ;)
Who kissed who first? He kissed me.
Who asked who out first? He asked me out on a formal date after I (reluctantly) included him on a group activity.
Who wears the pants? We both do...in turns.
Friends who should do this: All you marrieds.

If you're doing it...leave a comment and I'll link-a-doo to yours.

Because she is cool,

I am doing Julianne's "Tag".

1. Ten Years Ago....... I was all about the ska music. With skanking, and pick-it-up and "shows" (it was a near mortal sin to refer to them as "concerts") I was in my last year of beloved home school. I finally convinced my dad to teach us (siblings and I) to surf. I was awkward and nerdy as ever.

2. Five Things on My To-Do List....... Work on my talk for this Sunday, go to bed early (shoot), do 5 loads of laundry, visit teach for the first time since we've moved ;) , mail some belated birthday packages

3. Things I Enjoy..... mmmm books, music, family, beach, food

4. What Would I Do if I Were a Billionaire...... Shop. A lot. Sorry, I would. My dream is to be able to walk into Target one day and buy everything on my need/want list. Pathetic, huh? Then maybe I'd branch out into some "fun" shops where you get to buy things just because you like them... not because you need them. ;) Home school and travel the world with my fam. Of course, there would be plenty left over for humanitarian aid, sharing and such.

5. Three Bad Habits...... Never going to bed, procrastinating EVERYTHING, not biting my tongue when I should

6. Places I Have Lived..... Utah(don't hold it against me that I was born there) and 5 Southern California cities. Not too exciting, huh?

7. Five jobs I Have Had..... Well, basically I sold my soul to the family business and worked there in MANY various forms from the time I was old enough to stuff envelopes to the time I could manage an office.

8. Five Things People Don't know About Me....... umm.... You probably don't know them about me because I don't want you to know them about me. I plead the 5th here. That works, right? Goes with the whole "5" theme???

If you have not done one of these tags then it is your turn.

Visiting Teaching?

The lovely Queen Scarlett started this post on her own blog and it has really got me thinking.

I started to spill my guts on her comments... then decided it'd be less rude if I spilled my guts on my own blog. I will probably come back and edit myself later. I have a habit of vomiting out horrendous "first drafts". But I wanted to get the topic out there again.

Ok... so here's where I bear my testimony of the Visiting Teaching program. No, seriously. I know it's a pain in the rumpus. To say the least.

But I also have this thing with church programs that an old seminary teacher taught me. It has really stuck with me. She talked about how we all have things in church that we pick and choose to be our least fave and talk ourselves out of participating in fully. She shared, for instance, (this was in the days of "Homemaking" not "enrichment night") that she wasn't all that in to "homemaking". Especially not the craftiness and whatnot. But she had a testimony that the prophet, as head of the church, oversees these programs. She had faith that if homemaking were not meant for her, then the prophet would do away with it. They're not trying to waste our time. So she went. Faithfully. Most times she'd just sit alongside and visit with people. Went home empty handed. But her spirit was nourished. Sometimes more than other times.

I've applied this lesson to myself SO many times with different church programs. I have to tell you, it's worked for VT with me. When I make an effort to be available for a visit and when I make an effort to have contact and share the VT message with my sisters I am blessed in ways I can't explain. It has strengthened my love for the sisters I have visited. It's built understanding and patience. It has helped me to learn and practice being an instrument in the hands of the Lord.

I think, too often, we sisters shy away from sharing the Visiting teaching message.

I now share at least SOME part of the VT message at every visit. Which seemed weird to me at first. But that's what we're ASKED to do. So I just went with it. You know what? It's changed EVERYTHING for me with VT. Sometimes we spent much less or more time talking about the lesson than other things we wanted to chat about. But because I had started the habit of always sharing the message, truths were spoken and there was an opportunity to feel the spirit. It's turned into a great habit that has taken the chatting and getting to know each other element and kicked it up a notch. Because blindly chatting can sometimes be uplifting and other times just time filling. Which is part of MY prob with VT. Sometimes you will hit if off and sometimes you just... WON'T. So why try and force a friendship? I think that is so wrong!! And unnecessary!

I've gained a great testimony of not only the program but the VT message. Sometimes it seems so silly and awkward to share. But again, when we aren't benefiting from the message, the prophet will get rid of it! They don't need to be printing page fillers in the Ensign for nothing! The VT message isn't meant for only CERTAIN sisters. I don't have to save it for the the one's I don't have much to talk about with. From just making SOME effort and making it a habit to have the VT message as a part of my visit I have seen many great and wonderful things happen in my life as well as the lives of sisters that I've visited. Making it a habit made it much less awkward as time went on. It allowed for opportunities and opened conversations that would not have felt right or been touched upon otherwise. It allowed for the spirit to testify of truths while I was in the home. When you share those things with someone, natural bonds begin to form. It can open the door to being able to discuss other needs that the sister may have.

Prayer will be your guide in knowing what/how much to share of the message. Don't be afraid of it.

I don't make VT very glamorous. I'm not good at whipping up cute handouts or buying/making a gift for every visit. But that's not what we're asked to do. Funny things happen when you serve people. Bridges are built. I think the key, is in doing it the way that is outlined. We get sidetracked and overwhelmed by the "extra credits" of VT (bringing something, doing favors for the person, and being the person's best friend). When we pare it down and find a way to just strive for the basic VT that is asked of us, we are able to grow from that point. The extra credits will come naturally as different aspects of your watchcare relationship grow.

And you know that guideline that we should put VT before our other callings. Do it. See what happens. I'm serious. And if things slide on another calling (which I've found winds up RARELY happening BECAUSE OF VT) you have a great excuse. "Listen, I fulfilled my VT assignments this month. Something had to give."

Yes, people are lame and manage to bungle the most simple things! However, that does not change the true and correct principle of visiting teaching.

I know that the visiting teaching program IS for our benefit. The Lord wants to bless us and this is one of the opportunities He gives us to be blessed by Him.
